When a student shuts down, I don’t beg or guilt them. I pause. Here’s what I’ve learned after decades of teaching: Disengagement is rarely about laziness. It’s often about overwhelm. Sometimes, they’re processing. Sometimes, the task is too hard. And sometimes, they just need you to stop talking for a bit and let them feel the music again.
