Richard Serra’s The Matter of Time (1994–2005) is a monumental installation permanently housed at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Composed of eight massive weathering steel sculptures, including spirals, ellipses, and torus forms, the work transforms the museum’s Arcelor Gallery into an immersive environment where visitors physically move through, around, and within sculptural space. On Tuesday, March 26, American sculptor Richard Serra (1938-2024) passed away. His steel sculptures often have a strong impact on the viewer due to their material, scale, and form. A prime example is the monumental ‘Sight Point’; which has been an iconic sculpture for the Stedelijk and for the city since 1975. Richard Serra has done a lot for the museum, starting as early as 1969 with the exhibition ‘Op Losse Schroeven’. We are grateful for our long-term collaboration with the artist. – Op dinsd
