These rare, federally endangered vernal pool tadpole shrimp have an incredible life journey, going from cysts (eggs) to cyst laying adults in around 144 days. Since vernal pools are seasonal, the life cycle for these shrimp is entirely dependent on the presence or absence of water. Thanks to protective coverings, cysts can remain viable for several years, withstanding extreme conditions until the rains return and the pools fill, triggering the cysts to hatch. #shrimp #tadpoleshrimp #vernalpool #

Tonight, sarah and I went to a vernal pool I spotted the other day! It was magical. There were so many wood frogs and spring peeper, and we saw 5 spotted salamanders!
