Gunner Stanley Roberts was born on 16 September 1904 in Higher Bebington, Cheshire, the son of Joseph Stanley Roberts and Sarah Ellen Hall. He grew up in Wirral with his brothers Crosby, Aubrey, Arthur, Eric, and Cecil, in a close-knit family rooted in the community. Baptised at Bebington in the autumn of 1904, his early life was that of many working-class men of his generation — steady work, family bonds, and a quiet pride in place and duty. By 1921 he was working as a labourer in Rock Ferry. I
