Satan’s Bolete (Rubroboletus eastwoodiae), a chonky bolete with a reddish to brownish cap, deep red pores, and thick stem with well defined reticulation (netting/webbing) and a bulbous base: This is a mycorrhizal species that occurs in association with oaks. The flesh stain blue when exposed to oxygen, but not quite as quickly or as darkly as other red-pored boletes. This is a deadly toxic species that contains bolesatine, a glycoprotein that can accumulate in the liver, inhibiting protein synth

Here’s a side by side comparison of the #SatansBolete #Rubroboletuseastwoodiae and #LiverBolete #Suillellusamygdalinus, two red-pored blue staining boletes that are both having a fantastic season thanks to the rains we have been having. . In the previous two posts I have focused on the particular characteristics of each mushroom. In this post I am comparing the two. This Rubroboletus species is defined by its pinkish cap, red to orange to yellowish pores (they fade as they older), and big bulbou

As a follow up to the Satan’s Bolete, here is another blue staining red-pored bolete. This is the #LiverBolete or #Suillellusamygdalinus, a mycorrhizal species that I often see fruiting early fall through late winter into spring. Primarily I see this in association with coast live oak, but also with other oaks, madrone, and manzanita. It has a reddish brown cap, red-orange pores, and granular dots on the stem (but not true reticulation/webbing). The pores and flesh will quickly stain a deep dark

Found one of my favorite edible mushrooms, a Butter Bolete (Butyriboletus autumniregius). It is a mycorrhizal species that associates with hardwoods and mixed conifers in the California coast. It has a reddish/pink cap (fades brown), yellow pores that stain instantly blue when injured, and an olive brown spore print. It’s a delicious edible mushroom, but can be mistaken for Caloboletus (inedibly bitter) or Rubroboletus (poison), pay close attention to the pore color and color of the stem to tell

Check out this brightly colored Bolete demonstrating some interesting chemistry. As far as I can tell, this is #Lanmaopseudosensibilis, formerly known as #Boletuspseudosensibilis. This is a mycorrhizal Bolete that associates with oaks in upland hardwood forests. It has a reddish brown cap, a yellow pore surface that stains blue, a yellow stipe with red blush, turns blue with moderate intensity. I’m not entirely convinced this isn’t the toxic look alike Boletus sensibilis, but it’s hard to tell w

Happy #FungiFriday y’all, you made it through another week! Hopefully you have time and opportunity to go foraging this weekend because the mushies are out in full force (here in California at least). . This brown capped bolete is #BensBitterBolete or #Caloboletusmarshii, a mycorrhizal bolete that associates with coast live oak (although I found this near deciduous oaks and madrone). It has a tan-brown cap (occasionally cracking), super yellow pores that stain blue, and a bulbous base, but lacks

Reveling in New England summer I cut open this beautiful Bolete to see the brilliant yellow flesh quickly stain a dark blue. Not to be confused with a Bicolor Bolete, I’m pretty sure this is #Boletuspseudosensibilis or #Lanmaoapseudosensibilis, a mycorrhizal species that grows in association Oaks and possibly other hardwoods in Eastern North America. I tend to find this species with a light reddish/pink cap than turns a darker yellow/brown with age. The stem/stipe has some red blush to it (simil

Behold the mighty #FibKing #Boletusfibrillosus, a mycorrhizal species of bolete that associates with Douglas Fir trees. Related to the other “porcini” boletes like edulis, regius, and rex-veris - this mushroom has a darkish brown cap, brown stem, reticulation (webbing) at the top of the stem, and yellowish pores under the cap that do not stain blue. .I usually see this mushroom in the fall/winter season but it was awesome to see some fruiting during summer! While these are not as highly regarded

The fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) and King Bolete aka porcini (Boletus edulis) are often found growing near each other in the same habitat and season. The fly agaric is mildly toxic, but can be boiled in water several times to remove the toxins. King boletes are delicious sweet nutty meaty mushrooms, one of my favorites. #mushrooms #mycology #mushroomasmr #amanitamuscaria #boletusedulis #porcini | Fascinated By Fungi

Chrome-Foot Bolete (Harrya chromapes), fruits during summer/fall in association with conifers, beech, and oaks. Edible but often buggy, I love the pinkish cap, red scabers on the stipe, and brilliant yellow foot. Very cool #bolete . . . . #harryachromapes #mycology #mushroomidentification #fascinatedbyfungi

Big Beautiful Butter Bolete (Butyriboletus primiregius). This is an ectomycorrhizal soecies that associates with True Fir (Abies species) and grows in the Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges during the spring and summer months. It had a reddish cap, a yellow stem, bright yellow pores that stain blue, and yellow flesh that eratically stains blue very slowly. It is a very tasty edible mushroom with meaty texture and a mild buttery flavor, one of my favorites. It can mistaken for the very bit

Meet the Rooting Bolete (Caloboletus radicans) - a chunky mushroom that is unfortunately NOT edible! While not strictly toxic, its severe bitterness causes gastrointestinal symptoms in some people, and ruins a meal even if you are lucky enough not to be someone who suffers symptoms from eating it! In this video I show you when and where it’s found, and how to identify and therefore avoid eating it! #foraging #wildfood #nature #mushrooms #fungi | The Forager Within

This is a #RedCrackingBolete #Xerocomellus species (sometimes known as a Zellers Bolete). It has a brown grey suede cap that can turn red and cracked with age. It has a reddish stipe and yellow angled pores that stain blueish when bruised. The color change is due to enzymatic oxidation of organic acids. There is no psilo cybin present in these boletes. They are edible and have decent flavor and a soft texture that would pair well with scrambled eggs or an omelette. Hope you enjoy this clip with
