Gilbert, the golden retriever trained by murdered Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman, had to be put down after the shooting that killed her and husband Mark at their home.

A suspect is in custody after Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot Saturday, while state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded.

The dog of Minnesota Democratic State Representative Melissa Hortman was also killed in the shooting that left the politician and her husband dead.

The family of Melissa and Mark Hortman, who were killed by a gunman in their home over the weekend, has gathered at the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnetonka to oversee the formal procession for the Hortmans.

Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed, and State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were injured in what Gov. Tim Walz called "politically motivated" shootings.
