The new govt of Maharashtra is yet to be sworn in more than a week after the BJP-led NDA, also known as Mahayuti, clinched a landslide victory in state polls.

Amid continued suspense over who will succeed Eknath Shinde as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a senior BJP leader on Sunday night said that the name of Devendra Fadnavis has been finalised. The claim was made by a senior party leader while speaking to news agency PTI.

Throughout the campaign during this election, his rivals contemptuously referred to Mr. Fadnavis as Annaji Pant, a controversial figure in Maratha history, who is considered a ‘traitor’ by many for conspiring against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s son Chhatrapati Sambhaji, trying to get him killed.

The oath-taking ceremony of the new Mahayuti government will take place on December 5 evening at the Azad Maidan in south Mumbai and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend it.

The BJP leader's statement has come hours after caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde returned to Mumbai from his native village Dare Tamb, on Sunday evening.
