Chennai and nearby areas experienced heavy rains due to cyclone Fengal, disrupting transport services and prompting evacuations. While no major damage was reported, hospitals were inundated, and operations at Chennai airport were suspended.

A video that went viral on social media shows the plane was trying to land amid extremely bad weather. The strong wind during Cyclone Fengal's landfall forced the plane to abort the landing process and fly back.

Cyclone Fengal caused record-breaking rains in Puducherry, which recorded 48.4 centimetres of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Sunday. This marks the Union territory’s heaviest cumulative 24-hour rainfall in 30 years.

Flight operations, which were suspended on Saturday, resumed at Chennai airport at 1 a.m. on Sunday. Several neighborhoods in Puducherry resembled an island of sorts, with the streets submerged under water and cars and vehicles floating in various locations.

A red alert has been issued given heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu, south Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and interior Karnataka.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall this evening, with authorities issuing warnings for northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh.

The approaching storm, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, has led the state government to close schools and colleges in several parts of the state.
