The transfer portal opens Jan. 2 and closes Jan. 16 for college football players at North Carolina, NC State and Duke. But some aren’t waiting to make the decision to leave.

Rolesville High School brothers Zavion Griffin-Haynes and Jayden Griffin-Haynes officially signed their National Letters of Intent to join head coach Bill Belichick’s North Carolina football program.

In the 1990s, when Mack Brown was building a couple of the best college football teams in the history of North Carolina (meaning the entire state), he did an amazing job of signing a large percentage of the top in-state high school prospects while also strengthening his foundation with lots of out-of-state talent.

The junior wide receiver announced via social media his plans to enter the transfer portal, becoming the first known Tar Heel to publicly declare his intentions following UNC’s 4-8 season. Culliver, who opened 2025 as a starter, thanked UNC fans on social media and wrote he was “very grateful for y’all” as he looks for a fresh start elsewhere.

On Friday, the Tar Heels had a handful of players who entered the portal, including quarterback Max Johnson. Now, another piece of the offense is entering the portal. Running back Davion Gause plans on entering the portal after just two seasons with North Carolina.

A quintet of UNC football players, including defensive end Melkart Abou-Jaoude, earned all-conference recognition from the ACC Tuesday.
