SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — One person died in a fire at an apartment complex early Monday morning, authorities said. Firefighters responded around 4 a.m. to reports of a fire alarm and smoke at the complex on the 500 block of Baden Avenue, according to a news release from the South San Francisco Police Department.

Students and staff at Curtis Strange Elementary School in Kenosha returned from break Monday with heavy hearts as they mourned the loss of the Kannin siblings, who died in a fire on Thanksgiving.

The Carpentersville Fire Dept. said the fire happened in the early morning at the Meadowdale Apartments at 104 Meadowdale Ct. Firefighters said the fire started somewhere on the first floor and extended up to the roof. Video shows as large flames shot out of the roof of the building.

The blaze broke out around 9:30 p.m. on the 300 block of Escuela Avenue, according to a press release from the City of Mountain View. Emergency responders arrived on scene at 9:38 p.m. to find a kitchen fire in a second-floor apartment, authorities said.
