A Texas Democrat has pulled off a major upset win, claiming victory in a state senate special election for an area that heavily supported Donald Trump in 2024.

Democrats are cheering Taylor Rehmet for flipping a Texas Senate seat in Tarrant County, while Republicans are saying his win should serve as a "wakeup call" for their party.

Taylor Rehmet, a union president and Air Force veteran, will defeat Trump-backed Leigh Wambsganss in a runoff for the Fort Worth-area 9th District, according to a CNN projection.
