This clear soprano who helped define the sound of the late 1960s celebrates her 82nd birthday on June 4.

The Mamas & The Papas enjoyed an incredible stretch of success in the 60s, proving that the vocal group approach still had legs in the psychedelic rock era. But theirs was a relatively brief heyday.

The Mamas & the Papas hit No. 1 with 'Monday, Monday' on May 7, 1966. Songwriter John Phillips wrote it in 20 minutes, and the band reportedly hated it.
