“Last Tango in Paris” gained Bernardo Bertolucci international recognition after its 1972 release and a notoriety that followed the director for the rest of his life.

“I think Last Tango ’s success was in part due to the scandal, the sodomy, the butter, but in truth, it’s a tremendously desperate movie,” Bertolucci told Variety in a 2011 interview.
