Fifty-six people were killed and several injured in a stampede at a soccer stadium in southern Guinea, following clashes between fans, Guinea's government said Monday.

The clashes occurred during a game between the Labe and Nzerekore soccer teams in Nzerekore, the second-largest city in the West African nation.

A controversial refereeing decision sparked violence and a crush at a soccer match in southeast Guinea, killing 56 people according to a provisional toll, the government said on Monday.
