Garry McFadden, a charismatic and opinionated detective-turned-TV-personality, was elected sheriff of North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County years ago after promising that he’d limit the jail’s cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Masked and armed federal agents are leaving nearly a week after they began arresting people in Charlotte, according to the sheriff.
