Australia approved on Thursday a social media ban for children aged under 16 after an emotive debate that has gripped the nation, setting a benchmark for jurisdictions around the world with one of the toughest regulations targeting Big Tech.

Australia’s parliament has passed a law banning social media for children under 16, putting tech companies on notice to tighten security before a cut-off date that’s yet to be set.

Australia will become the first country in the world to outlaw social media use among under-16s. Children will no longer be able to use Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and other platforms after the Australian Senate passed a law confirming the ban. Should companies not comply with the ban, they could be fined up to A$50M ($32.5M).
