A police officer died and others were injured in what local officials described a hostage crisis involving a man with a gun and zip ties.

A former Denver police officer was killed in a shootout Saturday while confronting an armed hostage-taker at a Pennsylvania hospital. Andrew Duarte worked as a patrol officer in Denver from 2017 to 2022 and participated in the Denver Police Department’s DUI Enforcement Unit, police wrote in a statement.

A 49-year-old gunman was shot and killed by police after they said he held multiple UPMC staff members hostage and shot multiple people.

YORK COUNTY, Pennsylvania. (KKTV) - A former Colorado police officer was killed in Pennsylvania Saturday morning.

Andrew Duarte, the West York police officer killed in the line of duty Saturday at UPMC Memorial Hospital, has been with the department since 2022.

Authorities say a shooter entered UPMC Memorial Hospital's ICU and took staff members hostage before he was killed by police in a shootout that also left an officer dead.

Gov. Josh Shapiro on Saturday joined a flank of healthcare workers, law enforcement and first responders at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County to commend the service of all of those who responded to a shooting there that left a 29-year-old West York Police Department officer dead.

"I am inspired by the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff at UPMC and WellSpan Health who did tremendous work to save lives in the face of tragedy," said Shapiro. "It was my honor to meet with them and to thank them for what they do in service to their neighbors.
